Dark Stares – Hypnotize review

Last week, Dark Stares released their new EP, Soul Contract, though the band won’t be playing a release show till next month. May 2nd sees the rock quartet grace the stage at Camden’s Barfly where the band are bound to wreak havoc – if their latest offering is anything to go by. Taken from the EP, Hypnotize (I know, the”z” made me cringe, too) is an accessible single that shows them on excellent form.

The St Albans rockers accompany the single with an appropriately nigh on hypnotic video, dancing, bemusing lights and contrasts proving somewhat baffling. Hypnotize clearly takes influence from the likes of Royal Blood, prominent in the riffs the track’s fuelled on, and Muse, most obviously in the rolling, epic vocals. As with both these artists, though, there’s an ever present accessible edge to the track, mainly thanks to the chorus that urges a passionate sing along, making the track a radio ready one.
