Kojey Radical – Bambu review

Every so often you come across an artist that grips you – not in the sense of wanting to hear more of their work, but of literally making you stop in your tracks, pause the music, and listen to what you just heard again. Lines such as, “memory lane had the yellow bricks removed and the pavement is now stained with cigarette ash and shards of broken glass” are a perfect example of that, but there’s more than just that standing out in Kojey Radical’s first official offering of 2015 – Bambu (I Don’t Really Worry ‘Bout Nothin’).

This single comes after the success of the artist’s Dear Daisy: Opium EP release last year, and ahead of his tour with Mercury Award winning Young Fathers beginning in a few days (full dates below). Bambu first saw light of day back in January on Radio 1Xtra, and is set for release on June 1st. The spoken word artist appeals with the social commentary style of Beans On Toast, but would be better linked to the likes of George The Poet in style, analysing society from from a critical, direct angle, with a captivating video to accompany it.

In his own words, Kojey explains, “I wrote this piece as an ode to the thoughts about society people often ignore. As soon as we wrapped it up we were instantly met with this feeling that this record is important. I’ve heard it described as a societal soliloquy or a stream of consciousness on the first listen. I found that interesting. The hybrid of poetry and thumping almost trap like beat… The intensity of the delivery…Art shouldn’t compromise and Bambu is uncompromising.”
