The Shires – Friday Night review

The charts have recently shown that the UK loves Mark Ronson, but what does Mark Ronson love? We’ve the answer for you – The Shires. The country pop duo, Crissie Rhodes and Ben Earle , hail from Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, but have recently signed to the revived American label, Decca Nashville. Their single, Friday Night, is due for release on March 2nd alongside their debut album, Brave. The accompanying video (below) is as fun and infectious as the track itself, featuring Mark Boone Junior of Sons Of Anarchy and a group of US championship skateboarders.

It’s ridiculously hard to try and sum up this single without making comparisons to the likes of Luke Bryan, Lady Antebellum and Jess & The Bandits, but they must be made. It’s incredibly refreshing to see UK country music having something so good to say for itself, with this hit single bound to make waves. A weekend anthem for all those 9-5ers, there’s the distinct feel-good vibe that country music is so renowned for, with enough authenticity to show it wasn’t made to be so brilliant simply with the power of autotune.

The pair’s vocals mix sublimely, supported by Ben’s guitar to make the piece as straight-forward enjoyable as it is impressive. We won’t be the first to tell you they’ll be ones to watch in 2014, but there’s harm in reinforcing that – if you need your mood boosting, you can’t go wrong with this.
